Trebonianus Gallus Antoninianus, Emperor AD 251-253, minted at Rome, RIC 33, RSC 37, 21.5 mm, 3.94 gms, Obverse: radiate and draped bust of Trebonianus Gallus facing right, IMP CAE C VIB TREB GALLVS AVG, Reverse: Felicitas standing half-left, holding a long caduceus in her right hand and cradling a cornucopia in her left arm, FELICITAS PVBLICA, a very lustrous coin very well struck and centered with a nothing less than a truly superb and sharp portrait of Gallus in high relief, a detailed and sharp Felicitas on the reverse, and full and clear legends on both sides of the coin. This is a true gem of this issue for Gallus, just gorgeous. I’m itching to grade it despite my own rule not to give a grade unless the dealer from whom I purchased the coin grades it. This coin is very scarce to rare for Gallus, and especially so when in this nice a condition. Again, a superlative portrait of Gallus, enhanced by a very regal and elegant flare of his nostril. The Roman Imperial Coinage

The Roman Imperial Coinage (RIC), Volume IV (Pertinax to Uranius Antoninus), by Harold Mattingly and Edward A. Sydenham, 2004 reprint of the original three volumes in one: Pertinax to Geta (Part I), Macrinus to Pupienus (Part II), and Gordian III to Uranius Antoninus (Part III), Hardbound, 867 pages, 45 plates of coin photographs. This is a NEW book, though I’ve had it for about four years. It was used very gently and the only flaw in its pristine condition are three tiny spots on the front cover, shown in the photos. What they are I have no idea: my only guess is that they are perhaps tears over being unable to obtain one of the coins inside. They are very, very light. The book is tight as a drum and there are NO marks, creases, tears, anything. This volume encompassed my favorite period of collecting, but I will admit I’ve found it a bit daunting, and from it I’ve made my own “quick check” guide handwritten in a notebook for the most common types in my collecting area, so I see no further need of it now. The photograph showing text inside is a bit blurry: I found photographing coins far easier. The print of the text is sharp. Julia Paula Denarius, wife (the first of three) of Elagabalus (Emperor AD 218-222), struck at Rome AD 219, RIC 211, RSC 6, 3.07 gms, Obverse: draped bust of Julia Paula facing right, with her hair elaborately styled and made all the more fashionable by a braid up the back of her head, IVLIA PAVLA AVG, Reverse: Concordia seated left, holding a patera in her outstretched right hand, a star in the coin’s left field, CONCORDIA, a very lustrous coin with nothing short of a wonderful and beautiful portrait in high relief of Julia Paula, a very detailed Concordia on the reverse, and full and clear legends on both sides, a gorgeous coin graded Near Mint State by the numismatist/dealer from whom I purchased it, and Julia’s portrait on this coin is the most fetching and downright cutest I’ve ever seen of her with its chubby cheeked sweetness, and her coiffure with the braid taken up the back of that pretty head is rare from my researches, a real beauty of a coin of this first wife of Elagabalus who married him in mid-219 and found herself divorced and bereft of her status by late 220. Note: My trustworthy camera is not doing this coin justice: I’ve turned the coin every which way in bright lamplight and sunlight, and the feature seemingly around Caracalla’s eye is an especially stern and furrowed brow in hand, just a superb portrait. Note: the “marks”, and I put that in quotes purposely, on Gordian’s cheek need you to twist and turn the coin in bright lamplight to even make out. They are miniscule and of insignificant, if any, depth, and are not detractors in my opinion. I saw them in the dealer’s photos before I purchased the coin, and an email from him told me what I just told you, and my own examination in hand even in bright sunlight confirms it. Nearly everywhere I see verdigris mentioned on silver coins I read that it is easily removed, and among the coins I’ve bought with that observation I’ve never attempted it! I’ve never found it a distraction, though here it could be said to be one. Whether removing it is possible on this coin, I don’t know. This is one of those coins I think of as an ugly duckling, but a swan otherwise!
