Plautilla Denarius, wife of Caracalla (Emperor AD 198-217), minted at Rome AD 202 to celebrate Plautilla’s marriage to Caracalla, RIC 361, RSC 10, 19 mm, 3.2 gms, Obverse: draped bust of Plautilla facing right, her hair elaborately (and beautifully) woven into ridges, a bun at the back of her head, PLAVTILLAE AVGVSTAE, Reverse: Caracalla standing left, clasping the hands of Plautilla, who is facing him, CONCORDIAE AETERNAE, a lustrous coin with a tiny touch of very light even gray attractive toning with areas of suffused golden toning more subtle than the photos show, a nothing short of fabulous and very (!) detailed portrait of Plautilla, quite fetching and pretty, detailed happy imperial couple on the reverse and better struck than most I’ve seen, full and clear inscriptions on both sides, a beautiful coin, and one having from my experience a portrait of the empress that would be difficult to better, Asking price: $435 includes priority shipping and insurance, registered to other countries (see shipping information page)

Plautilla Denarius
Plautilla Denarius, wife of Caracalla (Emperor AD 198-217), from AD 202-211 (this marriage ended unhappily for Plautilla as she was executed on the order of Caracalla. Ah, simpler times.)
