Crispina Denarius, wife of Commodus (Emperor AD 177-192) until he had her executed in AD 183, RIC 279b, RSC 8, Obverse: draped bust of Crispina facing right, CRISPINA AVGVSTA, Reverse: clasped hands, CONCORDIA, very (!) lustrous coin difficult to photograph for me, a beautiful and sharp portrait of the empress, detailed hands on the reverse, full and clear legends on both sides, just a gem of a coin, struck on a tight flan, but that is usual I’ve noticed for this issue, and the legends are all full, the “red” “spots” on the photographs taken with the light shining from the left simply do not exist on the coin, some sort of photo/light feature it would take someone more expert than I am to explain! Difficult to photograph due, I think, to the luster, and the photographs don’t do the coin justice, a real beauty indeed and pin sharp with no wear, Asking price: $390 includes priority shipping and insurance in the U.S., registered to other countries (please see shipping information page)
Crispina Denarius
Augusta AD 177-182, 19mm, 2.8 gms, RIC III 286a; RSC 35; Van Meter 8, Obverse: draped bust of Crispina facing right, her hair elaborately weaved and gathered into a bun at the back of her head, CRISPINA AVGVSTA, Reverse: Venus standing left, holding an apple, VENVS, a very lustrous coin, superb and pin sharp portrait of the wife of Commodus, detailed Venus on the reverse, full crisp legends on both sides, an extremely attractive and beautiful coin, detailed and sharp, well struck and centered on a nice round flan, the portrait is much prettier and more flattering of Crispina than many I’ve seen but that, of course, is this man’s opinion, but she’s quite the fox on this coin, an exceptional example of the coinage of Crispina, a gem indeed, Asking price: $725 includes priority shipping and insurance in the U.S., registered to other countries (please see shipping information page)
