Gordian III Antoninianus
Gordian III Antoninianus, Emperor AD 238-244, struck at Rome AD 238-239, RIC 4, RSC 302, 4.69 gms, Obverse: radiate, draped, and cuirassed bust of Gordian III facing right, IMP CAES M ANT GORDIANVS AVG, Reverse: Providentia standing facing, her head turned left, holding a globe in her upright right palm and a transverse scepter in her left arm, PROVIDENTIA AVG, a just plain beautiful coin well struck and centered on a nice round flan with a fantastic portrait of Gordian and a sharp and detailed Providentia on the reverse, full and clear legends on both sides, a lovely example of this early issue with Gordian featuring facial characteristics of his unlucky predecessor Balbinus, graded Good Extremely Fine by the numismatist/dealer from whom I purchased it. Note: the “marks”, and I put that in quotes purposely, on Gordian’s cheek need you to twist and turn the coin in bright lamplight to even make out. They are miniscule and of insignificant, if any, depth, and are not detractors in my opinion. I saw them in the dealer’s photos before I purchased the coin, and an email from him told me what I just told you, and my own examination in hand even in bright sunlight confirms it. A lovely coin indeed.
